Dismissed

The war affects not only the Ukrainians residing where the fighting takes place, but also those living around the world. Still thinking about their hometowns but with their bodies abroad, with no possibility of safe return, they feel surges of strong emotions regarding their families, future, security and lack of stability. Sometimes they escape into nostalgia and emotional withdrawal. Other times, afraid of emotion, they completely cut themselves off from their memories, not wanting to deepen the frustration they feel. For many, the past is still alive, but there are also those who have not reconciled with it and cannot free themselves from the memories of traumatic events.

With this thought in mind, I photographed Ukrainians currently residing in Poland, using a projector to display on their faces the images from their homeland, still much alive in their memories. Trying to keep those photographs as simple as possible, I wanted to show the delusion of presence felt by people experiencing the war indirectly.
